About the City of Kissimmee

Kissimmee was originally founded as Allendale in the mid-nineteenth-century as a ranching town whose principal economy was based on agriculture and cattle ranching. In many parts of Kissimmee, this is still an important part of the economy and the community today. The town was incorporated as a city in 1883 and renamed. Much of its growth in the early years can be attributed to expansion of the South Florida Railroad extending its lines north into Kissimmee while at the same time a series of man-made canals were created. The canals helped with not only drainage of marshlands, but also connected the existing natural lakes allowing for the transport of people and goods; creating a large transportation hub for early 1880's Central Florida.

The city continued grow with ups and downs in the speed of its expansion. According to census records, in 1950 Kissimmee had a population of about 4,300 and its economy was supported mainly by ranching and citrus agriculture. The town experienced a population explosion and a shift in its economy toward tourism and development with the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971. After that more centralized communities began to form and the city remains a developing landscape while retaining much of its small town feel.

Kissimmee still has that historic train station that began it all. These days, it's one of the planned stops on the upcoming SunRail commuter rail system; scheduled to begin service in 2014. The airport is approximately 20 minutes from most communities, as are major thoroughfares such as I-4, the 408, the 417, John Young Parkway, Orange Blossom Trail and Osceola Parkway.

The town features a large event facility with concert arena at Osceola Heritage Park, multiple golf courses and a large outdoor shopping mall featuring stores such as American Eagle, Kohls and Best Buy and dining such as Pei Wei, Chilli's, Bonefish Grill and Olive Garden to name a few.
